If you are looking for somewhere different by way of location and ambience then you should at least give Las Cuevas a shot. Situated in one of the back streets of San Miguel this cave restaurant is definitely different. Spanish run you get a true feeling of the local area. The cuisine is obviously Spanish and I would say reasonable but not outstanding and certainly not in keeping with the prices they charge. Our three course meal with two bottles of wine came to roughly €40 per head which is expensive by any ones standards for this area. Having sasi that we had a reasonable night and one of the ladies looking after us had the most exquisite voice which she demonstrated by giving us an a capella song or two.If you are looking for a romantic night out and food is not the top item on your list this could be the place for you. If you like Mexican food then this restaurant is a little treasure. We only discovered it by chance after watching the three Kings parade in Torrevieja this January 5th. You'll find it just off Paseo de la Libertad opposite where they have the evening market. We had dips and nachos for starters all very good a depending on which you select spicy, followed by enchiladas. Mine were chicken enchiladas with a greed onion sauce and soured cream, very spicy and and very good indeed. I have made a note to return to this restaurant to sample more of what they have to offer and hopefully provide you with a more complete review. For now I would say definitely worth a visit! We had been meaning to go back to The Vestry for more than a year, so this week's visit was long over due. If you have not been there before you'll find The Vestry in the old town of Algorfa, down the hill from La Finca Golf. We met one of the joint owners, Kevin Byrne on this visit, a charming Irishman who has definitely stamped his Gaelic ancestry into the very fabric of the building. The moment you walk through the door there is a feeling of warmth and welcome. We were shown to our table, drinks were ordered and we were left to peruse the menu. There is a menu de la noche (two courses €13.95 & three courses €16.95) and a la carte, between the four of us we chose from both. Pam started with the deep fried brie on a mixed fruit coulis. This turned out to be a monster size piece of brie, somehow Pam managed to finish it without taking her appetite for her main. By the look of her empty plate I think she enjoyed it. I had the homemade mushroom soup as did Andy. This was exactly how I imagined it would be, certainly as good as any soup I have cooked. Delightful! Jennie went with the spicy prawns in breadcrumbs, very nice. |

Hi all, I’m back this week and straight into sampling the delights of Guardamar. One or two friends had told us to seek out Restaurante La Vuelta, which can be found on one of the roads leading down to the beach in Guardamar. And so we did…
Pam, myself and two very dear friends had an interesting if not confusing night out last Monday. Confusing? Well La Vuelta is run I believe by a Dutchman, which is fine but is it offering Spanish or international cuisine? It seems a little of both to me. Then there is the decor parts of it could be seen as formal, the chandeliers certainly give off this feel but these are juxtaposed with what can only be described as drift-wood intertwined with fairy lights... I liked the drift-wood light effect a lot, in fact I found them quite alluring. But alongside chandeliers?..

You can imagine we eat out quite a bit and on various days of the week. Over the past year we have definitely noticed the effect that the economic downturn has had on the restaurant trade. More often than not we are eating in restaurants where there are more staff than customers, situated in commercial developments that are almost mini ghost towns. So imagine our surprise when last Monday night we arrived at La Fuente commercial centre in Campoamor. The parking was almost full and the moment we stepped out of the car you could feel the buzz. There was night life here and it’s not even half term yet! We had come to La Fuente to visit Crystals restaurant, some say it’s the Costa Blanca’s best kept secret. We were about to find out…
Set back from the road Crystals has a large outside terrace overlooking the centre’s fountains perfect for al fresco dining. You enter the restaurant through sliding glass doors to find yourself in a pink and black space dominated by a dazzling crystal chandelier. Like a breaker crashing on the sand you are hit by a wall of sound. Acoustically Crystals doesn’t work! There were two tables of six seated when we walked in yet the noise level could have given the grid at Silverstone a race for its money. Is this the price to be paid for this modern minimalistic decor? The pretentiousness of the decor is magnified by the table arrangement. |

Well it looks like the summer is over! Time to take stock and for me to review my reviews, if you see what I mean. I’ve had a fair amount of feedback from people, both friends and visitors to my website that read this little column. The one regularly commented area is how do I decide upon my star ratings for restaurants. Now given that I’m just an extremely keen amateur cook and passionate ‘foodie’ my ratings are based on my experience of being a diner at the restaurant in question. I never tell the restaurant that I intend to review them before I have completed my meal and paid the bill. Hopefully this way I get a genuine feel of what you might expect when visiting the restaurant. This whole subject has had me thinking of how I can further help you decide where you might like to eat out.
The solution I have come up with is to provide you with a more detailed star rating. The type you might have seen used when you have read car reviews in magazines. I hope you find it useful, I would appreciate your comments.

We had been hearing about a restaurant in Urb. La Marina that did the most wonderful steaks and did not ask you to take out a mortgage to pay for them. When I hear these types of rumour I think... nah it can't be right, you get what you pay for in this life and cheap steaks aren't worth eating let alone venturing into deepest, darkest La Marina to find them! Well that's exactly what we did on this wet Saturday night in December. |

We had not eaten at the China Town since Kenneth the proprietor had introduced a €10 eat as much as you want menu. Well the first thing to say is that he might have reduced the cost and therefore the size of your bill but he has not reduced the quality of the food on offer. This is a good Chinese restaurant! |

If you are looking for a restaurant with something special to offer by way of ambiance then La Herradura might be just what your looking for. To an Englishman this restaurant looks authentically Spanish, set back from the road (CV 945) the restaurant is built round a courtyard dominated by a large palm. This forms one of two outside dining areas for those sultry summer evenings. |

Guests restaurant is set back from the main road through Benijofar (CV905) in a new development. This modern restaurant is pleasantly decorated in the minimalist style. This was my first time at this restaurant and my overall impression after the experience was average. The menu here is primarily English, what you might find on offer at many provincial hotels in the UK. |

This is not the first time I have eaten at the Happy Garden, it has an authentic atmosphere with plenty of bustle. If you take a table at the window you will have a fine view over the salt lake towards Torrevieja. The menu here is a mixture of Chinese and Thai food and although there is a choice of meats, fish and vegetables I would not call it extensive. |

Don't let appearances put you off, this is a large restaurant space with a small stage set on the left hand wall as you walk in. The warmth of greeting from Mansol our waitress for the evening was very genuine. There are a number of restaurants offering Argentinian steak in the region, this individual family run business is very different in a good way. The owners and chefs are from Argentina along with the cuts of meat. |

Esmeralda is an Asian restaurant housed in a modern commercial unit well decorated and presented with some flair. The staff are friendly and the whole place gives the feeling of welcome and cleanliness. However these are the only good points, the food is probably the blandest Asian food I have tasted. |

I'll make no bones about it the Indian Ocean is my favourite Indian restaurant on the Costa Blanca. Everything is right about the place, from the decor to the welcome you get from any of the staff when you walk through the main door. I say when you walk up to the main door, because you will seldom have to open it yourself since they always greet you with a smile as if by magic. |

Let me say from the start, that over the past year Cote Jardin has become my favourite restaurant on the Costa Blanca and indeed anywhere. Ludi & Julien have created the perfect dining experience from the welcome you receive as Ludi greets you to the truly mouth watering food that chef Julien prepares for your approval. In fact the whole team are worthy of a mention here well done Ludi, Julien, Virginia and Franck. |
